Good and bad....in a good way

I Would Describe Myself As

I grew up poor and under difficult conditions, but that has managed to make me a strong, empathetic, and determined person. I'm not rich or especially well off, but I'm comfortable and I do what I love in an academic setting. I spend a lot of time reading and writing for a profession, but I would have probably done those things anyway. We went to the library as children because there was only one black-and-white TV, which did not have cable. So, those things became a habit. I learned Japanese from marginalizing conditions, too. Poverty can, only very rarely and if you are very lucky, create room for positivity, I think. I'm well-educated, but most of the crucial things about life and living well I learned outside of classrooms; you don't have to be especially "well-educated," but I would probably ask you your opinion on a lot of things because I'm a curious person and I'm interested in other people's viewpoints.

I'm light-skinned, but I'm black. I grew up in a poor, rural, highly-segregated town, and we were all black then, so that will always be true for me. Pretty obviously, racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. attitudes and ways of life are a non-starter for me. Of course, we all have blind-spots when it comes to those things, but I'm quick to check someone and I expect others to do the same, out of respect and consideration.

While I have had a Trans partner before, I'm not necessarily looking for a serious and committed relationship. I'm happy to just have fun and see where things go. I'm not against serious relationships, but I don't take them lightly. I'm also happy to just make friends. I hear I have a somewhat unique sense of humor that not everyone gets. Like, I might point out a ridiculous choice that I made, not looking for consolation but pointing out how funny it was that I did that. Or, I might make an excruciatingly bad joke to see your reaction when I tell it. For me, the best reactions are those that laugh at the fact that I would do that. So, I don't take myself seriously all of the time, but I do take some things seriously, such as work, friends, and lovers. I got the work ethic from my father, who always worked at least fourteen hours a day. I got the love and friends from lovers and friends.

I don't get as much time to listen to it as I would like, but I draw a lot of inspiration, in work and life, from hip hop. I'm not a purist. I like lyrical and mumble rap. But, I can't help but shake the feeling that I have good taste in hip hop. Of course, I'm happy to get schooled on MCs that I'm sleeping on.

Overall, I'm a very calm person in life, but I'm not always relaxed in a given moment. I have been told for about as long as I remember that I have an "intense" way of looking at people, told enough times to believe it's true. But, I'm not scary, and I don't mean to look as intense as I apparently do. That's just the way I look at people. And, I suppose that some of my ways of looking at things, I mean, some of my beliefs are intense, too. Not evangelical-sort of intense, of course, but, for example, I am an atheist. That's kind of a mild example, but my beliefs are intense in that I take them seriously and they tend to be "radical." I have also changed a lot in my life. Like, a whole lot, so maybe my most serious belief is that I can be wrong. I really try to be open-minded.

Fundamentally, I expect to be treated well, so if you take your anger out on others, are spiteful, put others down to make yourself look or feel better, I honestly think that's wack. That said, I am very happy to meet new people, and I treat others well and with kindness. As the saying goes, some people think that's weakness, but it's not. It's experience, I believe.
